Boston-born artist Winslow Homer (1836-1910) grew up in Cambridge MA, then began his career as a magazine illustrator of Civil War scenes.
When he was 40 years old, he took up painting full time, and developed a direct, realistic and very colorful style.
Working at Prouts Neck ME, he rendered the beautiful but tempestuous Maine coast as no other artist has done.
No wonder Homer loved to paint the Maine coast...
His naval and maritime oils and watercolors hold a unique prominence in American art.
